Healthy Twist on Halal Guys

Halal Guys. Am I right? I don’t think you can call yourself a New Yorker if you haven’t tried halal food – either from Halal Guys themselves or a street cart. It’s personally one of my favorite places to get take out but it’s obviously not the healthiest choice. That’s why I made my own lighter version of the street cart staple we love so much. This version includes chicken and white sauce with a side salad. You can also include rice if you wish, to make it a true Halal Guys meal.

Timing:

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 25 minutes
  • Total Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients: makes 4 servings

  • 4 large boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 3 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 1/4 tsp of ground cumin
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 3/4 tsp sweet paprika
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1 cup whole milk yogurt (can substitute for greek yogurt if you wish)
  • 2 tbsp mayo
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 6 cups chopped lettuce
  • 2 medium tomatoes, quartered
  • 1/2 small red onion, sliced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: harissa for drizzling on top

Directions

Combine 2 tsp lemon juice, garlic, cumin, olive oil, salt, oregano, paprika and turmeric. Let the chicken marinate in this mixture in the fridge for at least 15 minutes. The longer the chicken is marinating the better (I marinated for 3 hours).

While the chicken is marinating, create the white sauce. Combine the yogurt, mayo, apple cider vinegar, remaining lemon juice, salt and pepper in a bowl and refrigerate.

Once the chicken is done marinating, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook for about 5 minutes on each side.

Reduce the heat to low and let the chicken continue to cook, until it’s no longer pink (about 10 minutes). Bring out a cutting board and slice the chicken into strips (it’s okay if the chicken is not completely cooked through yet). Add back to the pan and cook until finished over medium heat.

Create the salad by chopping the lettuce, tomatoes and red onion.

Plate the chicken over or next to the salad and drizzle with the white sauce and harissa if desired. Enjoy!
